Local Governments as Health Champions
From 2014-2018, six Wake County municipalities were funded through the John Rex Endowment to focus on changing policies and environments that increase access to healthy eating and physical activity opportunities for families.
These local governments (Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Knightdale, Morrisville, Raleigh and Zebulon) examined their own contexts to incorporate health into their programs, services, master plans, and big and small policy decisions. Most of the investments for health will be sustained through the creation of new positions, redirecting capital funds, and adopting new policies. Municipal staff are doing business differently as a result.
Healthy Places by Design provided technical assistance and coaching, and also created a learning network of the municipal grantees and their partnerships with support from AHA.
