AHA improves the health and well-being of Wake County residents by facilitating and supporting community initiatives.

Physical Activity

Organizational Policy

Organizations such as child care centers, schools, work places — even churches — can adopt a physical activity policy.  Eat Smart, Move More NC has a sample physical activity policy that organizations can download and adopt to foster active lifestyles.

Local Policy

There are numerous policies that affect people’s ability to be active.

Land Use & Zoning

Review the comprehensive plans or similar plans for the municipality in which you live. There are often opportunities for public input posted on the towns’ or city’s websites.

Parks & Recreation

Wake County has a Parks and Recreation Master Plan and ongoing Park Projects that may be of interest.

Each municipality has a Parks and Recreation Department, and they regularly have opportunities for public comment. Visit the website of the municipality where you live to learn more.

State Policy and Legislation

The NC Department of Transportation adopted a Complete Streets Policy in 2009 that provides for NCDOT to work with municipalities on creating communities that support active transportation. The NCDOT is now seeking comments on its Bicycle Pedestrian Plan.

One way to get involved with state and national transportation policy is to join the North Carolina Active Transportation Alliance (NCATA).

Federal Policy

The major policy that affect these same issues is the Federal Transportation Policy and the Safe Accountable Flexible Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users

This website, Transportation Issues Daily, offers a concise and non-partisan look at the federal legislation affecting all modes of transportation.
