AHA fosters and supports community efforts to make healthy eating and physical activity the way of life in Wake County.

More Tools

There’s more to creating a healthy school environment than the food served in the cafeteria or the P.E. classes provided to students.

Take advantage of  your student news network, school newsletter and web site to communicate about wellness, and work with your PTA to host fundraisers that do not conflict with wellness efforts.  Consider classroom rewards and celebrations too as you map out your wellness plan! Explore grant opportunities and consider how the PTA can play an integral role in school wellness. Consider this calendar of national health, wellness and local food events  that your school can tie into to highlight healthy lifestyles.

School Wellness Committees

Form a  health & wellness committee to coordinate healthy lifestyles efforts and spearhead the implementation and enforcement of a wellness policy.

Wellness committees can use these tools to assess their school environment:

Fundraising

Wellness in School Newsletters

School Celebrations & Rewards

Safe Routes to School/Walk to School Day

After-school Care and Standards

Grant Writing Tips and Grant Opportunities

PTA

Local & National Resources for Healthier Schools

National & NC Standards

Less than 15% of school children walk or bike to school, but walking one mile to and from school each day is 2/3rds of the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity a day.
