AHA’s mission is to make healthy eating and active living the way of life for Wake County residents. So we are providing this information for you to get you started on your way to adopting a healthier lifestyle.

As you make changes to your eating habits, we  hope you will see how important it is for more of us to eat healthy food. And while most of us know we should eat healthy, sometimes making good decisions is hard, not because we don’t want to, but because we don’t have the right information, or maybe the healthy choices just don’t exist! Together, we can change that. So let’s get started!

What is healthy eating?

While each individual’s needs are different, eating healthy generally means eating plenty of foods that are high in vitamins and minerals, while choosing foods that are low fat and sugar. Fat and sugar are nutrients that can cause health problems if we eat too much of the wrong kinds.

MyPlate.govThe best place to start is by looking at what you are already doing. You probably already eat some things you should continue to eat and drink. The trick is to do more of that (like eating  fruit as a snack, drinking water instead of soda or sweet tea) and finding ways to make small changes that you can live with.

ChooseMyPlate.gov has a 10 Tips Nutrition Education Series to get you started. Check out this summary of the 10 Tips.

Soda is the number one source of added sugar in American children’s and adolescents’ diet.
