Wake County Medical Society Gets Serious About Employee Wellness

This entry was written by Tami Hilton from Community Care of Wake and Johnston County.  She shares with us how the Wake County Medical Society has created an extremely successful (and fun) employee wellness program.

I have never blogged but am so excited about what the Wake County Medical Society has offered their employees this year... an Employee Health Promotion Plan!!!! It works like this:  If you choose to participate you can receive up to $200 for agreeing to incorporate some healthy lifestyle choices into your life.

  1. Smoking Cessation (no smoking or quit smoking with the help provided in the plan)
  2. Cancer Detection (You will have all Cancer screenings recommended for your age)
  3. Physical Activity (You will exercise 30 minutes 5 days a week)
  4. Nutrition (You will maintain a normal BMI or loose 10% of an elevated BMI

Not only can you set these goals, but opportunity is provided to set more personal specific goals. We kicked off the program with the opportunity to assess our Biometrics (cholesterol, BP’s, glucose, BMI’s, waist measurements) during a health fair day. We all took an online health assessment which gave us a detailed health assessment score as well as our health age along with much valuable education.

Once a month we share a food item with healthy recipes to try. So far we have had spaghetti squash and pomegranates. There is a healthy recipe board in the break room. People have committed to only bringing healthy drinks and snacks to work and our company provides only healthy food at company sponsored meetings or events.
We also have challenges. Right now we are in the middle of a breakfast challenge to encourage everyone to eat a healthy breakfast. The next one will help us all to be more optimistic. We have a small fitness library with magazines and fitness dvd’s to share. So far there has been a lot of positive feedback and we have 98% participation! We would like to share our success with other small businesses in our area who are interested in something like this. More to come on this great employeee wellness success story!
