Put the Excitement back in Exercise: Climb, Jump and Crawl Your Way to Better Fitness

This month's guest blog is brought to you by Be Active NC!

Has your exercise routine gotten, well, routine? Don’t let your reps get repetitious! Boring exercise routines are not just monotonous—they are a signal that your workout isn't working for you anymore.

By the time your mind is bored, your body is already bored and your fitness improvement is likely to plateau. Your body quickly acclimates to new levels of exertion, so what was once a challenging fitness routine soon becomes easy, which means you are probably not getting the results you want.

To ban boredom from your workout, try setting a fitness goal that is outside the box. An exciting alternative to the typical 5k or triathlon, mud runs like the Warrior Dash, have become all the rage in the last few years. They incorporate elements like obstacle courses and unique terrain. Training for an event like this allows you to take your workout beyond pounding the pavement and incorporate more cross-training. Ideally, you’ll have fun doing it too!

To train for the Warrior Dash this year, Be Active’s own Annie Martinie added bear crawls, monkey bars, alligator push-ups and parallel bars to her workout routine. She increased her muscular strength and endurance while adding interesting variation to her training schedule.

According to the American Council on Exercise, this type of cross training reduces risk of injury, enhances weight loss, improves total fitness, increases exercise adherence and leads to personal bests in your sport of choice. And, your kids can do them with you!

To gain all of these benefits, consider adding a new activity to your program that incorporates one of the following components of physical activity:

Cardiovascular Endurance includes large muscle, dynamic exercises such as walking, running, swimming, biking, hiking, stair climbing and jumping rope.

Muscular Endurance is improved by body weight exercises or light resistance training such as push-ups, squats or my favorite, the bear crawl. Basketball and soccer are also great examples.

Muscular Strength workouts focus on higher weights and lower repetitions, such as the weighted shoulder press, squat and bicep curl.

Flexibility practices like yoga will improve ease of movement, prevent injury and decrease soreness.

There are still a few interesting races in 2010! Check out the Blackbeard Adventure Race in Nags Head, the KIT Youth/Family Adventure Race at Lake Crabtree and the Dark Mountain Challenge in Wilkesboro.
