Snacks for Celebrations: New Resource Through CNS

WCPSS parents and teachers have a new opportunity to buy snacks and beverages for celebrations, classroom learning experiences, and staff events from their school dining room/cafeteria manager that meet USDA Smart Snacks criteria.

WCPSS Child Nutrition Services (CNS) now has a Smart Snacks brochure and price list offering snacks that meet the federal nutrition standards and WCPSS’ new Wellness Policy. Options include fresh fruit and veggies, cheese sticks, crackers, and even cupcakes (lower sugar and fat to meet the criteria). All the snacks and beverages offered are Smart Snack compliant. School staff and parents may contact their dining room manager to place orders; check to see how much lead time is needed for orders.

Compliance with Smart Snacks standards is also part of the AHA Brains and Bodies Award criteria. AHA thanks CNS Director Paula DeLucca and her staff for working for over a year to navigate approvals and challenges to provide this convenient way for schools to meet the WCPSS Wellness Policy and meet national standards.

AHA and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation had asked CNS to consider how it could help schools meet the national criteria on snacks because some schools were not qualifying for AHA’s award and national awards due to their lack of compliance with Smart Snacks criteria. We thank Paula and her team for making it happen and encourage all WCPSS schools to take advantage of this opportunity.
All foods and beverages served and sold in WCPSS already meet federal nutrition standards, and with this new option, schools have the opportunity to increase wellness by serving Smart Snack compliant foods.
