Wake County Encourages Backyard Composting
Wake County’s Solid Waste Management Division is offering compost bins at a discounted rate through March 31, and residents can pre-order a compost bin for $50 (half of the retail cost)! Residents who order bins in March will be notified of several convenient pick-up events throughout April and on Earth Day, celebrated April 22, residents picking up their bins will also be able to watch a demonstration on composting and learn the best way to get the most out of their food scraps.
Did you realize that food scraps and other organic waste, such as lawn clippings, can make up about 25 percent of what is in your trash can? Instead of sending these items to the landfill, Wake County is encouraging residents to get behind the composting movement and give those scraps a second chance.
Composting offers countless benefits to our environment and your wallet. Doing so can provide essential nutrients to soil for a healthy garden, which reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, can help soil retain moisture, which reducing greenhouse gas emissions produced in landfills, and even serves as an educational tool for children about recycling and conservation.
