Great Things Are Taking Shape at Brier Creek Elementary
This year Brier Creek Elementary School (BCES) in Raleigh has formalized a Health & Wellness Committee, promoted health & wellness in the school in a variety of ways, partnered with The Chef’s Academy in Morrisville and expanded gardening activities.
AHA thanks guest blogger Julia Woodson, a member of the BCES Health & Wellness Committee, for this article and sharing ideas that may be inspiring to other schools throughout Wake County.
These new garden beds at Brier Creek Elementary house existing perennial gardens with plants that will attract butterflies and bees–great for pollination!
Because Brier Creek Elementary is committed to our students’ health and wellness, we formed a Health & Wellness Committee with this mission: “Create a community that engages students, staff and families to improve health and well being through sustainable education, activities and service.”
We have mobilized this mission and engaged the students in a variety of ways. For example, in support of the National PTA’s proclamation of November being “Healthy Lifestyles Month,” BCES hosted our Inaugural Health & Wellness Week. Each day offered the students and/or parents health and wellness activities. This schedule highlights the fun and exciting happenings one week earlier this month.
- Sunday: PTA Family Night Out! Triangle Rock Club in Morrisville
- Monday: Veteran’s Day – No school
- Tuesday: Pep Rally
- Wednesday: Walking School Bus, Parent Academy & Staff Talent Show
- Thursday: Walk-a-thon During Recess
- Friday: Dance Walking at Dismissal with the Bouncing Bulldog Jump Rope team & UNC-CH Cheerleaders
The Parent Academy featured a health circuit that allowed students and their parents to learn from a variety of businesses in our communities whose professions contribute to our well-being. These businesses included: Dr. Robert Kent, The Triangle Eye Institute, Wake Orthopedics, Duke Primary Care, Brier Creek Elementary School Nurse, Raleigh Police & Fire, The Chef’s Academy, Burn Athletic and ATA Taekwondo.
Garden Weed & Feed
In collaboration with Wake Education Partnership, The Chef’s Academy, selected BCES as a partner in our school garden project. With The Chef’s Academy’s support, BCES was able to host a “Weed & Feed” in late October. The Chef’s Academy, BCES faculty, parents and students volunteered their time and created additional four vegetable gardens, weeded three established gardens, transplanted plants into an existing perennial garden, and enjoyed chicken BBQ from our 5th graders’ Washington, D.C. BBQ fundraiser during this fun and productive event.
We are also developing plans to make the garden sustainable and incorporate it into our core curriculum. We are looking forward to a wonderful 2013 spring-summer growing season and continuing our partnership with The Chef’s Academy! This My Carolina Today video highlights this partnership.
