Be Active: 1,440 Minutes a Day, Be Active for 30 of Them!

You may not have done the math, but Be Active North Carolina has. There are 1,440 minutes in each day. And they want you to use 30 of them to be physically active and improve your health! Be Active NC’s new campaign to get one million sedentary North Carolinians more active, more often launches on Feb. 26, along with resources and online tracking tools to keep N.C. residents moving!

More Active, More Often

“I don’t have time.” That’s the first excuse people give for not being active, according to Evie Houtz, youth programs manager for Be Active.  “With 1,440 minutes in day, we all have 30 minutes—get it in any way you can. Even if you do it in five-minute blocks. It doesn’t have to be exercise—it can be yard work or walking. Just be active and keep moving.”
AHA partner Be Active NC is headquartered here in Wake County in Morrisville and has regional offices at Appalachian State University and UNC at Greensboro, along with programs in all 100 counties of the state. “Today, nearly 50% of children and more than 50% of adults are not getting the minimum recommended daily physical activity they need,” Gary Gardner, Be Active CEO, said. So Be Active NC is launching its state-wide campaign to reach one million residents in five years. “We will reach this bold goal by engaging people where they live, work and go to school,” Gary said. “Each person reached who maintains a regularly active lifestyle will yield $964/year in reduced medical expenses per year.”
Through this campaign, Be Active NC is targeting Morrisville, Mebane and Moncure with resources and funding to implement programs across those towns that will get people moving and keep them physically active for at least six months. In partnership with town councils, health departments and agencies in those towns, Be Active is in place at schools, churches and work sites to implement programs (such as the Just Push Play program for schools) and models that the towns can sustain on their own for years to come.
